Zummer Shipman Sr.'s Obituary
Zummer Ray Shipman Sr. was born in Shamrock Texas, January 15, 1943 to Hubert David Shipman and Era Dale Shipman. He is predeceased by his brother Jim Williams. He is survived by his wife Sandra Shipman and their four children: Jamie Smith, Christine Labagh, Zummer Shipman, Jr. and Vince Shipman. He leaves behind five wonderful grandchildren named Erica Labagh, Jessie Labagh, Alyssa Shipman, Zummer Ray Shipman III, and Alexis Shipman.Zummer grew up in Boyes Springs, Sonoma, and graduated from Sonoma High School in 1960. During high school he played basketball and baseball, both earning him a spot on the wall of fame. He then received a basketball scholarship to UC Davis where he played for two years before sustaining a knee injury. While at UC Davis he earned an Associate of Academic Degree in business management. After college he enlisted in the Air Force, where he became a communications expert, specializing in Morse code and was stationed in Okinawa and Germany during the Vietnam War. After being honorably discharged, he returned home and utilized his talents as a quality control specialist for companies such as Lenkurt, FMC, Prodelin, Technical Plastics, Lockheed, and Advanced Components Technologies. After retiring, he found a new passion in antiques and collectibles.Zummer had many interests. As a young man he was an avid bowler on the semi-pro level, earning many trophies. He loved to play softball, especially first base. His teammates nicknamed him 'Big Ray'. Zummer liked to be involved with his children's activities. He was a coach for Jamie's softball team, and for Zummer's Little League team. He couldn't wait to see Christine's dance shows, and loved to see Vince wrestle for APW in Hayward. There was nothing in life that Zummer valued more than his family. One of his highest priorities was to be a living example of what is good. He will be remembered for his honesty, loyalty, and perseverance. He will be truly missed by all.
