William Charles Bowen's Obituary
William (Bill) was born in Oakland, Ca. to Carl and Verland Bowen. He had one brother, Howard, who predeceased him, and is survived by his sister, Peg Barkin.
After growing up in Oakland, he attended the University of Kansas and graduated in 1961 with a B. S. Degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He started working at General Dynamics and was with them for 6 years. In 1967, Bill began his 31-year “career” with United Airlines in San Francisco, from which he officially retired in 1998. In 1971, he married Joyce Nichols, and they celebrated their 48th anniversary in June. They settled in Belmont where they raised their family: a daughter, Katy (married to Kevin Finnerty) and a son, Matthew. He was also blessed with one grandson, Jack Larkin Bowen Finnerty. Bill, with his wife, Joyce, enjoyed traveling in the U. S. and other countries (many times with friends). He especially loved the trips with his family to Hawaii and Disneyland. He had a life-long passion for trains and found great joy in taking train rides in different states and countries. He really liked the challenge of walking the KATY Railroad Trail in Missouri (he and Joyce completed the 240 miles). Also, running his LGB model train was one of his favorite pastimes. Bill was an avid fixer, builder, and perfectionist. He was a quiet man but very much enjoyed the company of his friends and family. He was kind to all, deeply loved by his family, and he will be greatly missed. Donations may be made in Bill’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of your choice. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, January 26, 2020, 1:00 p.m., Skylawn Funeral Home, Rte. 35 @ Highway 92, San Mateo, Ca., 94402.
