Dear Tak was a great guy. We worked together as fellow counselors in the late 80’s and I found him to be one of the most caring and warm-hearted counselors I’d ever met. He had the most unusual sense of humor that made the working environment fun and meaningful.Deepest sympathy to his family and extended friends who will certainly miss him. Susan, Nathan Kristin, and all the Seki family members– my deepest sympathy to all of you for your loss. Tak was so special. Always generous with praise, humor, smiles and stories that would have you rolling on the floor in laughter. He gave many of us at Cal nicknames, and I loved that. I had never been called by a nickname and it made me feel so special every time he would say SLAKE!! (all caps because he would say it really loud and drawn the A out forever). I can still hear it now.He brought me baseball, football and basketball cards of the Cal students I had advised who were now in the pros and always threw in a sarcastic comment or story about each one. He loved the treats that the 2nd floor girls (me, Judy, Mary Lai, etc) would bring in and made us all want to bake more for his praise. I’m shocked and sadden to hear of the passing of my old friend. Tak and I go back nearly 30 years. He was always so much fun to be around. Tak is one of the reasons I have a career at UC Berkeley, and that I remember to laugh and seek out support in a profession that sees a LOT more human and academic difficulty than it sees easy-breezy college students. Tak helped train me, guide me, and voted to hire me on my 3rd round of applications to the L&S OUA at Cal. Tak teased me at work mercilessly, which is how I knew we were friends – I often asked him if my big brother was slipping him info and paychecks for all the ways he figured out how to get at me. ?? Tak loves (still loves!)his wife Susan as he did when they met — he was lastingly amazed, Susan that you said “yes” to his proposal. Nathan & Kristen, you lit up his already-bright smile whenever I asked about you, and he took incredible pride in your intelligence and your character. My heart breaks, yet I know Tak is at peace — he chose to leave us on his own terms. There are LEGIONS of people who love ans support all of you in the Seki extended family — please call upon us! Thank you Tak for brightening our lives here at UCB. I’ve had many students who would see only you if they needed advising at the College. They would say,”Oh yah, I have an advisor at the College who always helps me out. He keeps me on track, he’s always straight-forward and realistic which is what I need!” I would then ask the student,”Did you talk to Tak?” The answer was inevitably, “Yep!” Thank you for all your hard work and energy and for helping so many students (and colleagues) over the years.
