Myhre, David Vernon's Obituary
David Vernon Myhre of Half Moon Bay, California, passed away on Tuesday, September 26th, at age 85, after a decade-long battle with dementia.Dave was born on January 4th, 1932, in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, Canada to first-generation Norwegian immigrant parents who had established a farm there. He was the youngest of six children. In 1937 when Dave was five years old, the family moved to Abercrombie, ND to farm. Dave went to school, worked on the family farm, played baseball and basketball, and graduated from Abercrombie High School in 1950. He earned BA in Chemistry from Concordia College in 1954, a MS in Biochemistry from North Dakota State University in 1955, and a PhD in Biochemistry from University of Minnesota in 1962.During his graduate studies in Minnesota he met Ruth Elnor Abrahamson, also a graduate student, and they married at Ruth’s home in Canton, MN on June 23, 1957. Dave and Ruth had two children, Scott David (1960) and Sonja Lynn (1963), and Dave devoted himself to providing generously for his family, encouraging his children in sports and academics as he cheered them on. He was a deacon and elder in the Presbyterian Church USA, active in Bible Study and Stephen Ministry.For 32 years, Dave worked as a research carbohydrate chemist with Proctor and Gamble in Cincinnati, OH. His work provided the scientific method for producing the popular stackable potato chip, Pringles. He was an avid wood worker, bicyclist, golfer, gardener, baker, mechanic, and traveler. After retiring Dave and Ruth visited many countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa and spent years caring for their seven grandchildren.Dave moved to Half Moon Bay in 2003 to be near to his daughter Sonja and her family. He is remembered as a man of quiet hard work, integrity, generosity, spiritual dedication, and discipline, with gentlemanly manners and a ready laugh.Dave was preceded in death by his parents Selmer and Alma Myhre and his five siblings Victor Myhre, Maurice Myhre, Judy Strand, Owen Myhre and Kenneth Myhre. He is survived by his wife Ruth Elnor Myhre, children Scott David (Jennifer) Myhre and Sonja Lynn (Kevin Lansing) Myhre, as well as his grandchildren Luke, Caleb, Julia, and Jack Myhre and Krister, Scout, and Karsten Lansing.A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 4th, at the Community United Methodist Church in Half Moon Bay, at 3 pm with a reception to follow.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his honor: https://serge.org/staff/id-50134/and/or:Home
