Michael Fernandez's Obituary
Michael (Miguel) Fernandez, Beloved Teacher, Mentor, and Pillar of Redwood City Community, Dies at 93
Michael (Miguel) Fernandez, a beloved figure in the Redwood City community known for his dedication to education, his passion for baseball, and efforts to make school a fun and engaging place, passed away at the age of 93 at his home in Redwood City. He leaves a lasting legacy in the hearts of many he touched with his endearing charisma, tireless community involvement, and infectious love for life.
Born on November 5, 1929, in San Francisco, California at UCSF to parents Concepcion Navarrate and Gregorio Fernandez, Mike enjoyed the camaraderie of baseball games at the Big Rec with his buddies Prosper, Reggie and Jack. He graduated from Mission High School as part of the class of 1946. Following high school, he embarked on a semi-pro baseball career, and even played baseball on Okinawa during his overseas military service during the Korean War.
An outdoor enthusiast, Mike found joy on the ball field, at the beach, or exploring a National Park such as Yosemite or the Grand Canyon. Known as a recreational devotee, he relished camping trips and took a special interest in coaching sports, often leading massive kickball games with his students during lunch breaks.
A man of many passions, Mike was marked by an enduring love for the arts. He enjoyed dancing, listening to, and singing music, with fond memories from his time in the high school choir. He was a stalwart supporter of arts in the community. He participated in numerous musical productions such as "Princess and the Pea," "Oklahoma," "Bye Bye Birdie," and “Guys and Dolls,” raising funds that would allow all of Redwood City's students to attend Outdoor Education for free.
With a Master's degree in Education Administration from San Jose State University, he served his community as an elementary school teacher and administrator for over 33 years in Redwood City. After his retirement, he continued to serve as Outdoor Education Coordinator for more than two decades and frequently chaperoned students on hikes through the Grand Canyon.
Mr. Fernandez was adored by students and colleagues alike, known to go the extra mile in engaging everyone he met. A memorable moment witnessed him performing Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” dressed as a California Raisin to welcome parents to a new school year at Hoover School — a testament to his dedication in making school an exciting experience.
Not just a community figure, Mike was also a loving father, grandfather, and a great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Linda Fernandez, his children; Terry Blackwell (Bill), Maria Gleeson (Jim), Greg Fernandez (Michelle), Alegra Fernandez (Tim Boykin), and Sean Fernandez (Jodi). Along with his eight grandchildren: Joe, Jessica and Christine Eshleman, Jared Fernandez, Kevin McDonald, Marissa Stinson, Emily and Nolan Fernandez. Mike was predeceased by step-son Shell Stephens, survived by Shell’s children, Michael, Whytni, Colin, Briana and Holly. He also leaves behind ten great-grandchildren. Weekends were often spent indulging in games with family and friends of dominoes, or cards with the Giants game on in the background.
Revered as a beacon of lifelong learning, community spirit, and joy, whether you knew him as Mike, Mr. Fernandez or Miguelito, his impact will echo in the hearts and lives of all those he inspired. His lifelong love of play and his commitment to bettering his community is a legacy his loved ones and his community will cherish always.
