I was blessed to be Mikes daughter in law for 19 years. Below is something I wrote shortly after he passed. Thank you to all for sharing sentiments and photos it is appreciated for a much loved Mike! ❤️

Last weekend we lost an all star 🌟 in our family, Mike Fernandez- beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, dear friend, teacher, player, coach, principal, domino master, puzzler, Giants faithful, Grand Canyon school trip leader and organizer for so many kids (including my 7th grade self!) outdoor Ed advocate and loyal supporter, so many school play productions ( little did I know I saw my in laws in a production of Oklahoma in grade school- I liked it so much I bought the record soundtrack to Oklahoma), Puerto Vallarta mariachi dancing and drinking and cruising around on so many adventures. 🌅To know Mike and to be loved by him…too many words of gratitude, love and laughter. Engrained in my kids is his caring for others, a reason to party 🎉 , to celebrate to sing 🎶 a song to dance 💃🏿 🕺and rejoice because we are thankful for his love. ❤️

It's with great sadness to find out that Mr. Fernandez has passed away. I was a student at Hoover school (back in the 80s) when he was the school principal. I have fond memories of him playing kickball with the students and of him walkingvaround the campus socializing with the students. Because of him, our 5th grade class got to go on a week long trip to Sacramento & Yosemite.
He was the best principal I have ever known! My condolences go out to his family and friends.

I am greatly indebted to Mike Fernandez. He interviewed and hired me as a student teacher and gave me my first professional job teaching 5th grade at Hoover School in Redwood City. Throughout my first two years he coached me and mentored me, support I truly needed. I soon witnessed how much he cared for the children under his guardianship. He would often walk with them and find out about their individual lives and desires. Some teachers mentioned that he was like a ‘grandpa’ to some of the students. I considered this high praise. He showed his humanity to so many that were vulnerable and in difficult situations.
Visiting Mike’s office as new teachers frequently have to do for evaluations also provided other revealing details. His office prominently displayed pictures of his family. This was a very loving father. Mike went on to other administrative placements in our district and I stayed another decade at Hoover. Later, when I saw him briefly at different district functions he would always greet me warmly and often mentioned having visited the Grand Canyon and the Havasupai Campground or getting ready to take graduating middle schoolers there. He took pleasure in showing the beauty of nature to kids who were in need of its inspiring power.
Mike Fernandez really was a sportsman. The last day of school meant a softball game with teachers against the graduating sixth graders at that time. I, not being particularly gifted in that realm always was a bit frightened of not holding up my end, but Mike made everything ok and everyone was happy in the end.

Mike was a joyous, generous and hard-working individual who saw and brought out the best in those who came in contact with him. I feel privileged to have had him as a principal and can truly say he made a great difference in my life as he did with so many others. He will be greatly missed and dearly remembered.

Rest in peace Mike. You were truly a remarkable man with an amazing family around you. I will always remember your love for the Giants (and how they seems to always beat the Phillies), your delicious Mexican food, your can with the crazy steering, your MG, your manly hand shake, the effortless way you accept people and always so kind. You are in my thoughts and my heart, as well as hundreds of others because people remember and cherish good things, and you were a great thing. Miss you Mike .
