Dear Steve and Family,I am so sorry about your loss. I know you have such fond memories of Alice and that her energy and sense of adventure will be an inspiration to all of you for ever.As a fellow-docent at Filoli I was eager to hike with Alice to hear about her life on the estate as a young girl. When she agreed to my joining her on a hike with a group of 4th graders, i was thrilled. Little did I know that this experienced hiker with her tiny stature and her walking stick would be very difficult to keep up with! She regaled us all, adult and child with her memories of running through the Filoli estate with her brother, all the while pointing out and naming the trees, shrubs, flowers, insects and animals we passed, pausing for stories about each. Two hours flew by and none of us could believe we had arrived back at the beginning markers! What energy, enthusiasm, love and knowledge Alice shared with so many, young and older! She was a delight and her thank you messages from the students and teachers on her hikes were always filled with appreciation for all that she shared.I’m sorry I just saw this email from Chris Flynn Smith, my dear friend who introduced me to Alice. I was lucky enough to have had lunch several times with Alice. She will always be with me as I lead children on hikes at Filoli, as i’m sure she will be with all of you whenever you are camping, hiking, or just enjoying nature.Thank you, Dear Alice for sharing your love of nature with so many! With Love and Respect,Barbara Smailey##imported-begin##Barbara Smailey##imported-end##
