Albert Ng's Obituary
Albert Ng aged 95 of San Francisco passed away peacefully on Friday, February 2, 2018 at 5:24 A.M. He was born on Tuesday, November 21, 1922 in San Francisco to parents Gum Chong Ng and Tom Shee Ng. Albert was the 2nd youngest of 13 siblings, and the family lived on Ross Alley in SF Chinatown. He attended Spring Valley School through the 12th grade. He enjoyed attending school dances at the YMCA and Lions Club and loved to show off his favorite dance moves, the Foxtrot and Waltz. Life wasn’t easy for Albert and he had to work hard to provide a better life for himself and his family. At 14 years old he lived with an Italian family while attending school. He helped serve them meals and tend to their housework for $15 a month. In 1942, he was drafted as a defense worker at the Presidio in San Francisco and worked as a mechanic on their ambulances. He contracted mumps and was discharged from the military and not allowed to go overseas. Instead, he met his first wife Mary at a young age and supported her by working at the 450 Sutter Medical Building for many years. Albert began a new chapter in his early 30s. He married his 2nd wife Pauline and started building his family of 5 children. He owned and operated a new garage on Turk Street and one on Eddy & Jones Street. He later purchased four 76 Union Oil service stations; one on Bay Street, one next to Bimbo’s on Columbus Avenue, one on Van Ness Avenue, and one on Pacific & Taylor Street and expanded his business to operating and building tow trucks for the City of San Francisco. He ultimately sold his businesses and began a two-year career as Deputy Sheriff working for Matthew Carberry, Sheriff of the City & County of San Francisco. He rode horseback while transferring prisoners from the jail to the courthouse. This is where he found his love for horses and raised two on his own; one named Ginger and the other Star. Another chapter began in his 40s. Albert began his career at CSAA as a tow truck advisor. Coming to the realization that this wasn’t a financially stable position, he moved into a Sales Executive role. His warmth and charisma led him to a very successful career. He was their first bi-lingual (Chinese-English) speaking salesperson and was honored as their top salesman of the year several times over his 23 years until retirement. More importantly, the marriage to his wife Kathryn happened in August 1970. The Ng family grew as they had a daughter together and Kathryn brought 3 sons from a previous marriage. His retirement years was filled spending time with what he was most proud of, his family. Albert spent many hours just being Grandpa and Great-Grandpa to his 17 grandkids and 8 great-grandkids. His passion was cooking which he did very well and without any recipes. The most important thing to him was that no one, not even his children’s friends, ever went hungry in his home. Albert is survived by his wife Kathryn and their 9 children: Albert Jr. (Sylvia), Steven (Jenny), Harold (Sherry), Jason (Jeannie), Billy, Sharon, Karen (Thomas), Charlotte, and Sandra (Robert); 17 grandchildren: Steven Jr, Brandon, Kristine, Albert III, Timothy, Gregory, Benson, Trevor, Jennifer, Nathan, Jarren, Ryan, Kimberly, Jessica, Samantha, Madison, and Riley; and 8 great- grandchildren: Sophia, Travis, Nicole, Tyler, Devin, Dylan, Nolan, and Remi.
