Jason Yu

Jason Chia-Hsin Yu passed away peacefully among loved ones on the morning of March 4, 2022 in Redwood City, California. He courageously battled prostate cancer and leukemia until the age of 86. Jason is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Do-Sun Yu; his children, William Yu, Danny Yu, and Angela (Yu) Alexander; and his beloved grandchildren, Dhara Yu, Chandler Yu, Jevan Yu, Tyler Yu, Vivenne Alexander, and Clara Alexander. Born on February 5, 1936 in Wuhan, China, Jason was the fourth of Ping-Su Yu and Wen Zhen Hong’s five children. He moved with his family to Taiwan in 1949, where he attended high school. He attended college at the National Taiwan University and graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He achieved his dream of coming to America in 1963 to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology for his graduate studies, where he received his Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering, specializing in Transportation Engineering. He then obtained his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from West Virginia University and completed his postdoctoral research at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. In 1968, he became an assistant professor at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. In 1974, he moved to the University of Utah, where he was a full professor for 14 years. He published numerous professional articles and a book, Transportation Engineering: Introduction to Planning, Design, and Operations, in 1982, which was widely and internationally used as a university textbook. In his youth, Jason loved social dancing and playing basketball, and avidly watched NBA games well into his later life. He took great pride in his gardens, gourmet cooking, and investment accomplishments. Jason will always be remembered for his curious spirit, witty sarcasm, enjoyment of good food, and boundless love for his family.
