Betty Gagianas age 90, December 23, 1927-February 10, 2018–Betty Gagianas, age 90, passed away peacefully on Feb. 10, 2018 with her family by her bedside. She was born in Rochester, Penn. on Dec. 23, 1927 to Peter and Mary Gagianas.
After graduating from Monaca High School in Pennsylvania, she attended business school in Pittsburgh, Penn. Her first job was for the Phoenix Glass Company in Monaca, Penn. She worked as a secretary. She advanced her career by becoming head of a secretarial pool at the Michael Baker Engineering Firm in Rochester, Penn.
She moved to San Mateo, Calif. in 1962 and has lived here ever since. She became an executive secretary first at Ampex and then for notable private businessmen, including a major Coca Cola Distributor for the San Francisco Bay Area. She was very active in her early years at her parish church, Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Belmont. She served as a parish council member, a Sunday school teacher, and also sang in the church choir.
In fact, one of her favorite contributions was to church music, beginning with her participation as the organist and choir member at Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church in Aliquippa, Penn. Once moving to San Mateo, she not only participated in the Holy Cross Church choir but also a Greek folk singing group that performed annually at the Belmont Greek festival. In 1974, she was selected to travel with a choral group, headed by notable church musician, Dr. Tikey Zes, to Greece where they performed church music for the Patriarch of the Greek Orthodox Church. She also enjoyed participating in theatrical productions at Woodside Elementary School where she was in the chorus for several PTA productions. She had a beautiful alto voice.
Other hobbies and interests included gardening, sewing, and traveling. She enjoyed eating out and trying foods of different cultures. She was extraordinarily generous to her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother and father. She is survived by her sisters, Hido Athens; Desi (Peter) Evangel; brother, John (Mary) Gagianas; and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
A Tresigion service will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 6 p.m. at the Skylawn Memorial Chapel at Skylawn Cemetery in San Mateo (Highway 92 at Skyline Blvd., San Mateo). The funeral service will be on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. at The Church of the Holy Cross (900 Alameda de las Pulgas, Belmont). The funeral service will be followed by a traditional Makaria (luncheon) at the church’s Oaks Room. Burial will be at Skylawn Cemetery.
