Sherry Chin ???
From Sherry Chin:“Cleverness is aimless without good intention”, my grandmother used to tell me when I was a child. This quote defines grandmother’s philosophy on life well. Her goal in life was to bolster others to become a better version of themselves. She, not only taught this to those around her, but she also followed this in her own personal life. Grandmother was the first in the family to graduate from high school, and later on, with the support of the school she worked at, she finished college. When she is the shining example of her own beliefs, it is easier for other people whose lives she has touched to follow suit.Growing up, I recall the summer breeze and the feeling of excitement as Johnny, Annie, Alex and I would mount our bikes, ready to image up a new game to tire us out until we hear grandmother call out to us for dinner time. She took care of us with heartwarming meals, lessons in Mandarin, math, and life, and the holiday red pocket money. This was not a singular example. When I spoke to our other family members about my grandmother and what they remembered of her, everyone’s story is the same. They felt like she was a mother to them in various forms. Multiple family members from her side of the family and my grandfather’s side of the family in China would not have been able to study at the prestigious colleges and universities that they would have liked to without grandmother’s financial support. In the case of a distant uncle, she provided a roof, hot meals and warm beds for his family to ride through the tougher times in life. She was the reason why my brother and I were fed and in one piece when my parents were overwhelmed with work. Grandmother would try and give everything that she could in the ways that she knew how to. With her love and devotion to her family, we are better individuals because of her.
