William "Bill" Maier's Obituary
Born to Joseph and Clara Maier, in St. Louis, Missouri, Bill attended Corpus Christi Elementary and DeAndreis High School. He graduated from Saint Louis University with majors in Accounting and Philosophy. Bill enlisted in the U. S. Navy, being stationed in Hawaii, The Marshall Islands and then Japan. A family illness forced him to resign from active duty with the rank of Lieutenant. He returned to school, graduating Law School with a J.D. degree. He worked in both private practice and corporate law. After the family's move to California, and while employed with the Federal Government, he continued his legal education at Golden Gate University, graduating with an L.L.M. degree. Bill retired after a 27-year career with the Internal Revenue Service. Bill pursued his love of learning by attending several courses offered at both Stanford and Santa Clara Universities. He was an avid reader, loved classical music, Western European history and enjoyed photography while on his many walks. His greatest love, however, was spending time with his family. After retirement, Bill and his sons attended many Giants games at AT&T Park. He loved seeing his granddaughters perform in the Childrens' Musical Theater productions; loved hearing them as they played in their school bands; and delighted in their academic achievements. He exercised daily at the Central YMCA until diagnosed with cancer in February of 2012. He was declared cancer free following surgery in July. Sadly, he succumbed to pneumonia and sepsis after his immune system was fatally compromised. Bill was a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle. He leaves behind JoAnn, his devoted wife of 48 years; sons Bill (Deb) and Robert (Sugi); granddaughters Allie and Katie (all of California); and nieces Kym and Kelly and nephew Eric of Texas. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Joe and sister in law Starr and an infant son. Bill also leaves behind life-long friends Rich and Dave, both of St. Louis. We mourn the loss of one so loved. There will be a private graveside ceremony at Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo, California. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Bill's name to the Salvation Army or to the charity of your choice.
