Wauneta Ramona Vasko's Obituary
Wauneta "Nita" Ramona Vasko passed away on September 15, 2025, in San Mateo, California at the age of 89. She was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on May 21, 1936, and moved to Daly City at the age of 2.
From a young age, Nita took an interest in the arts. She was a lovely dancer and a gifted piano player. As a teen, she even played the piano for singer Johnny Mathis.
Growing up in Daly City, Nita spent a lot of her youth exploring the lively city of San Francisco. She got her first job as a switch board operator, volunteered as a USO dancer and spent some of her free time roller-skating. That is how she met the love of her life, John. She was at a roller-skating rink in the city when she spotted him. She thought he was handsome and decided to trip him as he skated by. That is when their journey began; Together for 48 years of marriage until John’s passing in 2004.
Nita was also a devoted mother and grandmother. She raised 3 daughters and 4 grandchildren, while working as a waitress in various restaurants on the peninsula for over 45 years. She loved her family, job, and spending time with others. She would make friends wherever she would go, leaving an imprint on those she met along the way.
Nita loved reading, dancing, playing bingo, going to the casino, and getting her nails and hair done (which she always received compliments on, even at 89 years old).At 78 years old, Nita decided to go back to school and get her GED. As the oldest student in her program, she was an inspiration to us all, and we were all so proud of her!
Nita is survived by her children, grandchildren, and relatives. She was the mother of Joni (Wes), Sue (Mike), Ramona (David), and “adopted” daughter, Barbara. Her grandchildren include Joshua, Jordan (Sunny), Matt (Lesley), John, and Jessica. Known as Gigi to her great granddaughter Madison. She is also survived by her sister Connie, cousin Veloy, nephews Terry (Susan) and Todd (Kerry), niece Kim (Tom), and many grand nieces and nephews in Nebraska. As well as John’s family on the East Coast.
Nita will be deeply missed by everyone she knew. Her legacy, strength, kindness, and love will live on through us all. We will miss you so, so much and will carry you in our hearts forever.
Private graveside services have been held at Skylawn Cemetery in San Mateo
