Virginia Hurley's Obituary
Virginia (Ginny) Hurley died on Saturday, January 13th, 2018, at the age of 92. Ginny was born on September 14th, 1925 in Burlingame, CA, the daughter of Catherine and Ernest Rickard and the younger sister of her brothers Ernest and William. While attending Burlingame High School she was active in Job’s Daughters International with her lifelong friend Lois Reichstetter, rising to the level of Past Honored Queen. While in high school she met Herbert (Herb) Hurley, who attended the rival San Mateo High School and was rarely seen very far from a motorcycle. World War II interfered with their romance in more than one way – Herb enlisted in the Army and Ginny volunteered for the Ambulance Corps. During her physical for the Corps she was found to have TB and was forced to spend her senior year in a sanitarium. She graduated with her class in 1943 in spite of her isolation. After the war they were reunited and on October 20th, 1946 she and Herb began a marriage that lasted more than 71 years.Ginny worked at Bethlehem Steel until the birth of Kathleen, when she devoted her time to raising her and later Kathleen’s younger brother Dave. It was crucial to her that she be at home when her children returned from school, and she was a constant beacon of cheerfulness, support and afternoon snacks throughout their childhood. Once they moved on to college she felt free to enter the workforce again and became a teller at the San Carlos branch of Bank of America. Her intelligence, good humor and attention to detail were well-suited to the demands of the merchant window there.Virginia loved playing bridge, hosting multiple monthly groups that were the setting for much laughter, cameraderie, intense strategic gambits and afternoon snacks. She was fond of boating trips to the Sacramento Delta with Herb and the kids, as well as semi-annual trips to Lake Tahoe. She and Herb were active in the San Carlos Chickens Ball, a vaudeville-style fundraiser for local schools, as well as Los Danceros, a ballroom dancing group. She is survived by her husband Herbert, daughter Kathleen (children Logan and Chelsea), son Dave (wife Anne Reid and children Brenna and Elliot), and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers Ernest and William.A celebration of her life will take place on Friday, January 19th at 12:30 pm in the Portola Chaple at Skylawn Memorial Park with burial immediately following.Because of the exceptional and tender care she received from Pathways Home Health and Hospice, donations can be made to “Pathways.” Please attach a note to donations with “in memory of Virginia Hurley” and mail to:Pathways Home Health and Hospice585 N.
