Thelma Isabell Douglas' Obituary
Thelma Douglas passed away in Redwood City on Friday, August 25, 2017 at the age of 90. Thelma was born in Webster City, Iowa and raised in Jewell, Iowa, the oldest child of Oscar and Helena Wepel Hanson. She graduated from Randall High School and attended Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She retired from Lenkurt Electric in San Carlos. But to her, her biggest and most important job was raising her three sons, Marc, Tom and Dan.Thelma married Michael J. Douglas from Nazareth, Pennsylvania on June 3, 1949 at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Redwood City. Followed by a wedding trip to Hollywood, Los Angeles, Fresno, Yosemite and Catalina Island they resided in Redwood City during their 63 years of marriage.Thelma was an active member of the Sons of Norway organization for over 65 years, participating in their many events like the 4th of July parade, Camp Norge Recreation Center in Alta, baking delicious Norwegian desserts and making many lifelong friends.She never missed her sons or grandchildrens sporting events, cheering them on. In her later years she enjoyed watching her favorite teams on TV – Go 49er’s, Go Warriors, Go Giants! She also was an avid card player, and enjoyed teaching family and friends new games!She loved to travel and enjoyed many road trips across the United States visiting family in Pennsylvania and Iowa over the years, camping and going on cruises with family and friends. She and Mike especially enjoyed travelling with her sister Gertrude and her husband Richard.Thelma loved to cook! She always had something homemade and yummy at her house – her famous macaroni salad, jello, bread pudding, chips and dips, cookies and casseroles to name a few.Thelma is survived by her three sons, Marc and his wife Nancy of Davis and their daughter Jennifer, Tom and his wife Pamela of Woodside and their daughters Diana and Katherine, Dan of Redwood City and his son Christopher, sisters Gertrude of Hollister and LaVonne of Albert Lea, Minnesota and brother Franklin of Corpus Christi, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband Michael and brothers Nels, Richard and Walter.Friends are invited to attend the viewing from 4-7 pm on Wednesday, September 13, 2017, and the funeral service on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at 1 pm followed by the internment at the Skylawn Memorial Park, Route 35 at Highway 92, San Mateo. A reception will immediately follow the internment at the Skylawn Funeral Home.The family requests that in lieu of flowers that donations be made in her memory to the Sons of Norway, Vigeland Lodge #155 Scholarship Fund, c/o Don Hermansen, 209 Kingsford Lane, Redwood City, CA 94061.
