Sunny Tsai Chu's Obituary
May Sunny Tsai Chu (b. 1941 d. 2023) rest in peace.
Sunny Chu was everyone’s sunshine. She was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt and friend. She left this world on June 9, 2023 at age 82 after a battle with bile duct cancer resulting in liver failure. Sunny passed away peacefully in her sleep.
Sunny was known for her generosity, her vibrant laugh and her willingness to help others. She was an excellent cook and loved to entertain and bring people together. She was adventurous and loved to travel. Most of all, she was fun. Sunny always managed to bring joy and laughter wherever she went.
Sunny was born in Shanghai, China, the third of seven children of Jonathan and Sangee Tsai. Their family fled to Taiwan in 1947 in advance of the Communist Revolution. Sunny attended the Teachers University in Taipei, earning a Bachelor's degree in home economics. After college she briefly worked as a schoolteacher. In 1968, at the age of 27, Sunny went abroad to America to reunite with family.
While staying with her sister Lily and her husband Frank Ling in Palo Alto, California, Sunny met her husband Hsieh-Ho Chu. Together, they had 3 children in Los Angeles. The family relocated to the Bay Area in 1977 where the kids attended public schools and went on to earn their bachelor’s degrees from the University of California. In 1992, Sunny battled and survived breast cancer. Her strength was always formidable.
Sunny was an avid gardener and an early member of the Home of Christ church congregation. In retirement, Sunny and Hsieh-Ho traveled the world and spent as much time as possible with their beloved grandchildren: Luella, Maxine, Phoebe, Dane, and Kaia. There is no greater love than what Sunny shared with her grandchildren.
Sunny is survived by her husband Hsieh-Ho, and her siblings: Lily, Lily (in Hong Kong), Tansy, Kenny, and Rosita. Her children Alberta, Bruce, and Camille and in-laws Sarrita, Jason, and Murray; nieces and nephews and their spouses: Alice, Amy, Richard, David, Jaime, Marcus, Clara, Stanley, Joyce, Grace, Kuang-Kuo, Lin Li, Lin Jia. The entire extended family is too numerous to name but will all miss Sunny dearly.
