Bates, Steven Matthew's Obituary
Steven Matthew Bates, beloved son, brother, and uncle, passed away on July 1, 2026, at age 61. Steve is survived by his brother Gary Bates, sister Jennifer Gerst (Tony), nieces Emily and Ellen, and nephew Andrew. Though Steve was born with Down Syndrome, Steve’s parents Nancy and Herb Bates ensured that he lived as independently as possible. Steve grew up in Hillsborough, CA and graduated from Mills High School. As a young man Steve swam in the Special Olympics, including once at the international games. As an adult Steve lived in San Carlos, and he worked at the Home Depot there for many years. Steve was an avid SF Giants and 49ers fan, and wore his spirit wear proudly! His family trips to Scottsdale for Spring Training were yearly highlights, and he attended so many games that the Scottsdale Stadium staff recognized him. With the New Directions group, Steve traveled internationally several times. Steve hosted his high school friends for pizza nights, and he was devoted to his longtime girlfriend Trudy. In recent years, Steve was cared for by a wonderful team from FHAR (Family Housing & Adult Resources), and he attended FHAR’s day program.
