Steve Kuenseng Yu's Obituary
Steve Yu, aged 90, died at Stanford Hospital on March 31, 2023, of a brain hemorrhage sustained from a fall.
Steve was born May 13, 1932, in China. He fled from China to Taiwan as a teenager during the Communist takeover to live with a half-brother. He and his parents were never to see each other again. After graduating from a Taiwanese military academy at the top of his class, Steve was given the prestigious honor to train with the US Army to bring back his training experience to Taiwan. Steve later returned to the U.S. where he obtained his Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. Upon graduating, Steve worked for Singer in Massachusetts where he met his wife, Melissa (deceased). They were married on August 30, 1964.
Steve was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Through his skills, talent, hard work, and perseverance, he rose through the ranks over the years at companies including NCR, Signetics, ITT, AMD, and Motorola. After many moves between the east and west coast, he and Melissa finally settled in northern California in 1988. Up until his retirement, Steve served as the President of Pico Designs, a subsidiary of Motorola, where he was well-respected in his profession and as a leader.
Steve was a quiet, kind soul who enjoyed and found pride in fixing things around the house, as well as working in his garage and yard. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to friends and family for repair work or rides. In his later years, he enjoyed caring and spending time with his grandchildren, finally allowing himself to catch up on what he missed out on when he had to prioritize his job as his own kids were growing up.
Steve is survived by his daughters Ellen Yu and Karen Yu (Jim Whelpley), and his son, Ronald Yu (Mina Capulin), along with his grandchildren, Faith and Hope Borkowski, Devon and Logan Whelpley, and Kendall and Kassidy Yu. Steve’s memory had been deteriorating due to Alzheimer’s Dementia, but the family was grateful that he continued to remember each of them up until his passing.
Steve’s funeral will be held Friday, April 28th, at 11:00am (visitation starting at 10:00am) at Skylawn Funeral Home (Pacific Chapel).
