Shirley Mebane's Obituary
Shirley Mebane passed away in the comfort of her home on May 3, 2012 at the age of 66. Born on May 9, 1945 in Greensboro North Carolina to Walter and Louise Turner, Shirley grew up in Greensboro, graduated from Dudley High School and attended East White Oak Missionary Baptist Church. She married Larry Mebane of Greensboro North Carolina. Shirley's family moved to California after the birth of her first child, Eric, to be with her husband who was in the Navy. She had her second child, Renate while living in Monterey California. The family moved to Berkeley California after Larry Mebane (husband) completed his military duty. After her divorce, Shirley Mebane moved to Oakland where she worked for Blue Cross as a healthcare insurance adjuster. She returned to Greensboro, North Carolina after Eric (son) went to college in 1980. She visited California frequently to see family and friends. Shirley loved having cookouts, traveling, dining out and shopping. She was a devoted Christian, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and loyal friend to all that knew her. When her health waned and she was no longer able to travel easily, she became the glue that held everyone together, checking in on everyone she knew with predictable regularity. In 2005, she moved to Redwood City, California to be near her children and grandchildren, due to her health. Shirley's parents and her sister, Malinda Mebane of Greensboro, North Carolina, precede her in death. Her children, Eric Mebane, MD of Redwood City CA and Renate Westbrooks (Omar) of Alameda CA, sisters Luvenia Turner of Greensboro NC, Mary Jeter of Washington DC, five grandchildren (Donavon, Jonathan, Omar, Odaye and Kaleb), and a host of family and friends, survive Shirley to cherish her memory. Shirley was loved by all who knew her and she will be missed.
