Shang Wang Chang's Obituary
Shang Wang Chang was born in Chu Tung, Taiwan on July 22, 1924. He spent his childhood in Taiwan, excelling in all area of academics – especially in the field of math. Due to his academic excellence, he was accepted into highly prestigious institutions in Japan for his high school and college education. He furthered his education with a PhD degree from Iowa State University in 1967 and subsequently moved to Modesto in 1969 to teach as Professor of Math at Cal State Stanislaus. He taught for 23 illustrious years, retiring in 1992. He remained as an honored Professor Emeritus for an additional 20 years.His interests were wide ranging. He loved to garden in his yard, mass producing prolific crops of vegetables and fruits every year. He appreciated the outdoors, finding pleasure in camping and fishing; many a meals were served with the fish he caught. He also enjoyed playing games, particularly mahjong and the card game hearts. Even in the autumn of his life, he would still win the majority of the time. With time afforded by his retirement, he traveled extensively with his wife. After 33 cruises, they had visited every continent on earth, sparing only Antarctica. Also known as Sam Chang, he passed peacefully of natural causes at home in Modesto at age of 88 on Dec 19, 2012, surrounded by his beloved wife, daughter and sons. His presence will be missed dearly by his family and friends.He is survived by his spouse of 63 years, Teru Chang; 4 children June Chu and her husband Douglas, Henry Chang and his wife Janet, Paul Chang and his wife Jenny, and Frank Chang and his wife Yoshi; and 6 grandchildren, Frances, Andrew, Eric, Angela, Albert and Tiffany.Services will be held on December 28th at Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo, CA between 10:30am -12:30pm.
