Ruth Sun's Obituary
Mrs. Ruth Sun, a faithful servant of God, went into the eternal glory with our Lord on July 3rd,
2022, at her home in San Francisco. She was 102 years old. Her home going can be
described as in Matthew 25:21 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You
have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share
your master’s happiness”.
Mrs. Sun was born on January 8th., in 1920 to a renowned family of artists, and scholars in
Xinjian, Jiangxi Province of China. She had 2 older stepbrothers and 5 younger brothers and
sisters. She excelled both academically and in sports. Although the youngest, she always
ranked the first in her classes. She also played on the Volleyball team. Later, she attended St.
John’s University, a prestige college in Shanghai, China. She was also awarded the 1st prize
for both the city-wide Essay and Chinese calligraphy competitions. Trained by her mom, Mrs.
Sun became an artist in Chinese painting and calligraphy. After she became a Christian, she
used her Chinese art and calligraphy skills to make poster-size bible verses for Christians.
Additionally, she translated the “Pilgrim’s Progress” into Chinese in her own hand-written
calligraphic format with the Pin Ying phonics as a tool to teach Chinese and to share the
gospel.
In 1945, Mrs. Sun married the love of her life, Mr. Joses Sun, in Shanghai. Afterwards, she
joined her husband in her father-in-law’s import & export business, and she was a great help
in his business. In 1950, she and her husband settled in Qingdao, Shandong, and raised a
family of four daughters.
In 1951, she accepted the Lord as her personal Savior and was healed from numerous
miscarriages. In 1962, God miraculously led her, her husband and two of the older daughters
out of China to Macau, where they answered the calling from God and established the Church
of Macau. In 1976, she arrived in San Francisco, California with her whole family. She was
actively involved in church ministries with her husband: leading Bible study classes, family
prayer meetings, sharing gospel at several nursing homes, and developing a Christian
outreach program for children and families in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco. At the
age of 83, she and her husband published a quarterly Christian journal and established The
Spring ministry. Mrs. Sun played a major role in the ministry, and in designing and editing of
the journal. At the old age of 90, together with her husband and the ministry team, she was
involved in organizing a Christian Conference every year in Hong Kong. Because of her
dementia condition, the last conference she was able to attend in Hong Kong was in 2013
when she was 94 years old.
In her lifetime, she revered God and dedicated her life faithfully to the work of God’s Kingdom
in preaching the gospel. She had truly set a good example for us all!
Mrs. Ruth Sun is survived by her youngest sister, 4 daughters, and 3 grandsons. They all
loved her dearly. A private ceremony has been arranged at Skylawn Memorial Park off
Highway 92 in San Mateo.
