Robert Stephen Volosing's Obituary
Robert (“Bob”) Volosing, aged 91 years young, died peacefully at home in So. San Francisco on Wednesday, April 30, 2014.Bob was born February 25, 1923 in San Francisco to Stephen and Helen Volosing. He grew up in St. Francis Wood and during his youth enjoyed rowing and swimming with the South End Rowing Club. Bob graduated from Lowell High School. After attending San Francisco City College, Bob enlisted in the Navy in 1942 where he proudly served during WW II in the Pacific Theater, aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kula Gulf as an aviation machinist mate.After serving in the Navy, Bob attended and graduated from Cal AeroTech Institute in Southern California. He then began his long career in the aviation industry with United Airlines. During his 37 year tenure there, he was very active in the AFL-CIO. After retiring from United Airlines, Bob began his career in the safe and vault industry with his son Jeff. Eventually Bob started Strongarm Security Company to develop and market tools specifically designed for the safe industry. Jeff eventually joined his father at Strongarm and continues to grow the company today. Bob was inducted into the Safe and Vault Technician’s Assoc. Hall of Fame in 1999.Bob met the lovely Zona Wright on a double blind date in San Francisco at the Fairmont Hotel. They were not the intended couples but started their courtship and married February 3, 1951. Together they had four children, Paula, Jeff, Chris and Laura; five grandchildren (Adrianne, Allison, Stephen, Rachel, Howie); three great-grandchildren (Zackery, Matthew, Ava Grace).Bob has been an avid supporter of veterans’ causes. The family suggests donations in lieu of flowers to any veterans’ charities, especially Disabled Veterans and Wounded Warriors Project.A private funeral and Catholic service will be held on May 7th at Skylawn in San Mateo.
