Robert J. Smith, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2020, surrounded by family, after a 19 month long battle with brain cancer. He was 85 years old.
Robert (Bob) was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Mary Catherine Winterer and Gerald J. Smith on July 14, 1934. His family eventually settled in Millbrae, California. Bob graduated from Serra High School in San Mateo and continued his education at the College of San Mateo.
Bob was a US Navy veteran and served in the US Navy Reserves after active duty.
On August 6, 1966 he married Dona (Bybee) Staton. They had three children together.
Bob's career with the U.S. Postal Service spanned 41 years, during which he worked his way up from a mail carrier to Post Master of Millbrae. He also served as Post Master of Daly City and retired as Post Master of Hayward.
Bob was a member of St. Dunstan's parish in Millbrae, where he volunteered his time coaching basketball for 3rd through 8th grades.
Bob had a passion for golfing, hunting, fishing, painting, chopping wood and especially loved spending time with family and friends at his cabin in the Bucks Lake Wilderness.
Bob is survived by his wife, Dona, children Susan (Stephen) McLellan, Robert (Cynthia) Smith, Bonnie (William) Petit and stepchildren Cheryl Feist, Roger Staton, Sandra (Joseph) Mount, siblings Mary Francis Long, Gerald (Lynda) Smith, James (Elle) Smith, cousin Patricia McCue, 8 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Bob was predeceased by his parents and stepson Donald Staton.
Private services will be held at a later date.
