In 1943, at the age of 18, Bob was drafted into the U.S Army. During his military career, he was deployed in Lyon, France where he served as a 'prisoner of war' guard. At the end of his tenure, Robert had completed almost 10 years of service in the Armed Forces and achieved the rank of Corporal He was honorably discharged on September 15, 1953. Instead of returning to Louisiana after being discharged from the Army, at the age of 28, Bob decided to go to Northern California to begin his civilian life. Shortly after he had arrived in Bay Area, he accepted a position as janitor and maintenance man at San Carlos Bowl on El Camino Real in San Carlos, California. Bob continued to work at San Carlos Bowl for 36 years and retired from there in 1986. His first few years were spent in Redwood City, California before he settled down permanently in San Mateo, California in the early 1960's. In 1962, Robert met Mae Seward and they began dating seriously. Although never married, Bob and Mae lived together throughout the 1960's. In May 1964, Mae gave birth to their son, James F. Goldsmith, Bob's only child. They ended their relationship in 1970. Bob departed this life on Saturday, October 6, 2012.
