Richard Yun Chiao's Obituary
Richard was born on August 11th, 1963 in Taipei, Taiwan to Feng-Lun Chiao & Kuang-Fu Hsiao. He has two brothers and was the youngest son of the family. When he was 2 years old, his family moved to Libya, where his father was working. At a tender age of 12, Richard attended boarding school in the island country of Malta for 2 years, where he learned English. When Richard reached the age of 14, he followed his brother’s footsteps and traveled to the US for a better education. He lived with his brother in Chicago, and graduated from xxxx High School. He continued his education at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he earned 3 degrees in electrical engineering: a BSEE, MSEE, and PHD.After graduation, Richard started his career as research staff at GE in 1990, and became a System Engineering manager in 2000. In 2004, he joined Siemens as VP of Innovation. In 2008, he become the VP & General Manager of Siemens Ultrasound Systems Korea. In 2011, he moved back to the Bay Area and became VP of Portfolio and Strategy. In 2014, he joined BD Biosciences as VP of R&D. Over his career, Richard excelled as a researcher, an inventor, and a manager. Richard has published numerous technical papers, and was named in over 40 patents.Richard first married Hsin-Lin in 1989, their marriage lasted 15 years and they have a daughter Cassandra. In 2004, Richard married Mei Wang; together, they raised their daughter Hollie. He counted their 3 years in Korea as the best time for the family; however, Richard and Mei later separated in 2016. In his spare time, he enjoyed jogging, dancing, performing art, and especially water sports such as swimming, sailing, wind surfing, and kite surfing. In recent years, he took up guitar lessons and enjoyed playing jazz music.Richard passed away on March 9th in San Francisco. A few hours before his death, Richard shared his last message on his Facebook page. It is a saying from Buddha: “In the end, only 3 things matter: how much you loved, how gently you lived, and how gracefully you let go of thing not meant for you.”Richard was tall, handsome, smart, witty, passionate, hardworking, adventurous, and most of all, a loving and caring person. He was an inspiration to many. He will be missed deeply by his family, friends, colleagues and all those lives he has touched.
