Raj Pati Chandra's Obituary
Raj Pati Chandra passed away peacefully on October 14th, 2022 at the age of 94 in Belmont, CA. She was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister.
Raj Pati Chandra was born on July 12, 1928 in the Fiji Islands to Mr. Prasadi and Mrs. Kunti. She attended Primary school in Fiji but due to her large family which included 7 brothers and 1 sister, she left school and took a central role in helping to raise her family. Although challenging, she taught herself to read and write English and could speak her native Hindi as well as the local dialect of Fijian. She was skilled in and enjoyed cooking, sewing, knitting, and embroidery.
On February 7, 1948, Raj Pati married John Hem Chandra. At this time she converted to being a Methodist and was a devout church participant attending the Dilkusha Methodist Church in Nausori, Fiji.
Raj Pati and John Chandra were blessed with 3 daughters and 1 son. In 1981, Raj Pati and her husband migrated to the United States residing in San Mateo, CA. She continued to support her husband and family devoutly and found joy in further uniting with her extended family. One of Raj Pati’s favorite times was the traditional Sunday gathering for dinner at her house where she loved to serve her favorite dishes such as baked and curry chicken, fried rice, fried potatoes, gravy, assorted vegetables and a wonderful desert to satisfy one’s sweet tooth.
Another passion of Raj Pati’s came in the form of professional sports. She became a huge San Francisco 49ers and San Francisco Giants fans reveling in the victories and agonizing in the defeats. Much to the surprise of her family, she could give play by play recounts of the games and was very familiar with the players on each respective team.
The centric theme to Raj Pati’s life was her family and she held this love and devotion to the end of her life’s journey. She is preceded in death by her devoted husband John and she is survived by her family; daughter Anita Shiriwastaw and her husband, Lawrence and grandchild Sanjay.
