Paul Choi's Obituary
Paul Choi, 94, passed away on March 19, 2025, in San Francisco, California. Born on December 24, 1930, in Canton, China, Paul lived a remarkable life defined by resilience, curiosity, and an unwavering commitment to learning.
Paul learned how to be self-sufficient at the age of 10 when he immigrated here. At a young age, he learned to be resourceful and handy with numerous skills including cooking and construction. Paul served in the army as a translator during the Korean War, a role that showcased his linguistic skills and adaptability. He was also a merchant mariner, navigating the seas with expertise and gaining extensive knowledge of shipping and boats.
A man of many talents, Paul was entirely self-taught in numerous fields. He had an innate ability to fix anything—whether automotive, electrical, plumbing, or refrigeration—amassing an impressive collection of tools over the years. Beyond his technical talents, Paul was an avid photographer and enjoyed taking photos at every event. He also enjoyed biking, basketball, gardening, and fruit picking. His fascination with aquariums led to a home filled with fish tanks, a hobby he passed down to his family.
Paul had an insatiable thirst for knowledge. He was an avid reader who kept up with current affairs and could engage in conversations on nearly any topic. His interests spanned from politics and finance to cars—he took great joy in buying vehicles for his loved ones. He also found pleasure in hosting dinner parties where he could share stories and lively discussions over a glass of Seagram’s VO.
Above all, Paul took immense pride in his family. He is survived by his daughter Carol; his son Jack and daughter-in-law Susie; and his grandchildren Kayla, Michael, and Tyler. He found joy in teaching others what he knew and was known for his generosity, wisdom, and fairness.
A wake will be held on April 10, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Skylawn Memorial Park, 888 Lifemark Rd, Half Moon Bay, California. A funeral service will follow on April 11, 2025, at 11:30 AM at the same location. Reception to follow funeral.
