Michael Douglas' Obituary
Mike Douglas passed away in Redwood City on July 16, 2012 at the age of 87. Mike was born and raised in Nazareth, Pennsylvania the son of Thomas and Julia Womnicka Dlugos. He graduated from Bethlehem Vocational School in 1942 then working as a machinist for Bethlehem Steel in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He served in the US Navy from 1944 to 1946 as a Motor Machinist Mate 3rd Class and he was stationed at several bases in Virginia, Mississippi and California. After his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1946 he went back to work at Bethlehem Steel for one year before moving to California in 1947.In 1947 he entered the California Carpentry Apprenticeship Program, graduating in 1949 and worked as a union carpenter until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of Carpenter's Local #217. He worked on commercial and home construction and one of his favorable was building the McDonald's restaurants up and down the Peninsula. He worked for Sequoia High School District Adult School as a Carpentry Apprentice Teacher from 1959 to 1969 and was a Redwood City Building Review Board member. He belonged to the Sons of Norway for over 60 years, was a member of the American Legion Post 105 for 28 years and St. Pius Church for 62 years. He married Thelma Hanson from Jewell, Iowa on June 3, 1949 at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Redwood City, California, taking in the California missions and Catalina Island on their honeymoon. They resided in Redwood City during their 63 years of marriage, raising their three sons Marc, Tom and Dan. He is survived by his wife, Thelma of Redwood City, three sons, Marc and his wife Nancy of Davis, and their daughter Jennifer, Tom and his wife Pamela of Woodside and their daughters Diana and Katherine and Dan and his son Christopher of Redwood City. Mike was preceded in death by his sisters Stella and Josephine and his brothers John and Victor. Mike had been in the Seniors with Grace Care Home in Redwood City since March 2011 and the family would like to thank everyone there for the wonderful care they took of him. They would also like to thank the Optimal Hospice Care staff for the care they provided. Friends are invited to attend the viewing from 4-7pm on Monday, July 23, 2012, and the Funeral Service on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at 10:00 am followed by the internment at the Skylawn Funeral Home, Route 35 at Highway 92, San Mateo, California. There will be a reception immediately following the internment at the Skylawn Funeral Home. The family requests that in lieu of flowers that donations be made in Michael Douglas memory to the Sons of Norway, Vigeland Lodge #155 Scholarship Fund, c/o Don Hermansen, 209 Kingsford Lane, Redwood City, CA 94061 or St. Pius Church, 1100 Woodside Road, Redwood City, CA 94061.
