Melida Ruiz's Obituary
ãâ?¬â?¬Melida Lacayo Ruiz, aka as Melcochita, Mama Mela, Lita, Tia, died after living 88 full years.ãâ?¬â?¬ She passed in her home surrounded by loved ones. Cause of death was determined to be general debilitation.She was born September 7, 1922, in Managua, Nicaragua, to Paz Morales and Toribio Lacayo. She had three sisters, Maria, Alicia, Haydee, and one brother, Toribio Jr. Haydee is the only survivor. Melida had a burning passion to become a school teacher; she graduated from La Normal de Senoritas, in Managua, Nicaragua, as a grade school teacher. In 1947 she arrived in San Francisco to pursue the American Dream – leaving the comforts of the classroom for the factory floor.ãâ?¬â?¬ In 1948, the young shy school teacher married the dynamic and ambitious Antonio Ruiz, also from Nicaragua. They decided to forgo a honeymoon and a wedding reception so they could buy a home. With a lot of hard work and help from family and compadres they purchased their first home in San Francisco. That home became the first home and haven for many Nicaraguan families starting their lives in the United States. Melida gave generously to all of the new immigrants sharing her home and hospitality to all in need of shelter. In addition, she used her teaching skills to become a foster mother and to provide quality care to many children who were at risk or abandoned. As a bilingual teacher with the HeadStart Program, Melida was recognized for her outstanding performance. Melcochita will be deeply missed by her loving husband, Antonio Ruiz. Mama Mela’s family includes: Children: Chester Ruiz, Marvin Ruiz (1951-2003), Martha Ruiz and son in law Brad Maggy, and Antonio Ruiz. Grand Children: Children of Chester and Susan Ruiz: Mark Ruiz, Kathleen Ruiz, Michael Ruiz, Michelle Ruiz and Meagan Ruiz; Children of Martha Ruiz and Paul Johnson: Jennifer and Christopher Scerri, Paul and Becky Johnson; Children of Martha Ruiz and Brad Maggy: Aaron Maggy and Brian Maggy; Children of Antonio Ruiz and Susan Widule: Antonio Ruiz, Guillermo Ruiz, and Joanna Ruiz; Great Grandchildren: Children of Jennifer and Chistopher Scerri: Milena Scerri and Christopher Scerri Jr. : Children of Paul and Becky Johnson: William Johnson. Foster daughter Louisa Gutierrez and family. Also, we would like to express our appreciation to Silvana Massa, Amy Wireman and Molly Vatinel.
