Mee Fong Wan's Obituary
Obituary for Mee Fong Wan
Mee Fong Wan was born on October 15, 1926, in Toi Shan, Kwong Tung, China, and passed peacefully in Oakland, California, on April 2, 2023, at the age of 96.
Mee Fong lived a long and healthy life. She was the devoted wife to Yuen Bing Wan (deceased) whom she married as a young woman in China. Together, they ran a small, successful produce business in China, and had their first three children. In 1955, the Wan family moved to Hong Kong to raise the children, with the youngest daughter born in Hong Kong. Mee Fong and her husband worked hard together in raising the family and ran a corner store, along with caring for the grandmother and great grandmother for many years in the same household. Even though Mee Fong only had a few years of schooling, she had the smarts, drive, and intelligence to run a small business with her husband and managed the family’s finances while raising four children and caring for the elder generation. She highly valued higher education and worked very hard in providing higher education for her children.
Then, in 1971, Mee Fong and her family immigrated to the United States, first settled in Lincoln, Nebraska, with the help of her father-in-law. After spending a couple of years there, the family moved to San Francisco, California, where they remained, thrived, and the family grew. Mee Fong was a resident of San Francisco for 50 years.
Mee Fong worked as a seamstress in San Francisco for many years to support the family until her children were old enough to support themselves. Later, she helped raise her grandchildren so that her children and their spouses could both work. She eventually proudly became a U.S. citizen and helped other family members immigrate to the United States.
Mee Fong was most happy when she spent time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. They are the love of her life. She made great home-cooked meals for the whole family almost every week. That was joyful to her, even though it was hard work. She also enjoyed good meals at restaurants with her family – appreciating each dish that’s been served to her. Later in life, she enjoyed going on her children’s family vacations, including Hawaii, Las Vegas, Reno, The Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Mexico, and Hong Kong.
Mee Fong was a loving, kind, and devoted mother to her four children—Mariana (husband Randy), Raymond (wife Doris), Lisa (husband Larry), and Tracy (husband Carl). She was grandmother to eight grandchildren—six grandsons: Brian (wife Ellen), Jonathan, Vincent (wife Bonnie), Jason (wife Michelle), Jeffrey (wife Rochelle), Kenneth (wife Jamie); and two granddaughters Amanda, and Caylyn. She also was great grandmother to six great grandchildren—Josiah, Abby, Kayla, Lucas, Melody, and Sophia.
