Mary Virginia Brooks' Obituary
Mary Virginia Brooks June 19, 1927 – November 17, 2013 Our beloved mother, Mary Virginia left us to go home on November 17, 2013. She was the light of our lives despite the dementia that took away her ability to tell the stories she always enjoyed telling us of her life in Pineville and Alexandria, Louisiana growing up on her father’s farm. She was born on ‘Junteenth’, June 19, 1927 to Horace and Lolita Jackson, the sixth of ten children. She and her family made the great migration from the south to California during WWII and settled in Oakland. She married Charles W. Brooks, a WWII veteran, on June 18, 1949. They honeymooned at Niagara Falls and drove back to their new home in San Francisco. Her first daughter, Susan V. Ausberry, was born on August 25, 1950, followed by the birth of daughter, Carol M. Brooks on October 15, 1951.Mary Virginia passed away peacefully at her home in San Francisco with her daughters by her side. Mary worked as an elder care and hospice nurse for most of her life, bringing comfort to many in their last days. She also worked a short time for the SF Ballet sewing beautiful costumes. Most of her time and attention was given to her children and her family members, many of whom were the beneficiaries of her loving care and generosity at some time in thier lives. She was an adventurous soul and a great companion and friend to many. She was preceded in death by her parents, Horace and Lolita and her siblings, Malcolm, Willis, Muriel, Patricia, Emma, and Alida. She leaves behind to mourn her two daughters, her four grandchildren, David, Lydia, Aaron and Stacy, her remaining siblings, Smeria, Nymroy and Walter and many heartbroken nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces and nephews and friends. She is truly beloved and will be missed.
