Marvin and Joyce were officiating at a Western Zones meet in Kihei, Maui quite some time ago (don't remember the year). George Cleveland and Darryl Wu were there also. My family and I were coincidently in Kihei at the same time using our timeshare unit for a week's vacation in Maui. I went to the pool to say hi to everyone and Darryl and George asked me if I wanted to join them for a round of golf at the Makena golf course after the meet was over. It's expensive to play golf there but the hotel where the Pacific Swimming team was staying got a discount at Makena as a hotel perk. Marvin was within earshot of my conversation with George and Darryl and walked over and said, "why don't you just use my name to check in at the golf course to get the discount because I don't play golf". So, I was Marvin Lanphere for a day and got the hotel discount to play golf. Yes, not on the up and up thing to do, but it became a private little joke between Marvin and myself whenever I saw him after that date. I'd walk up to Marvin to say hi, and after saying hi I would always add "remember when I was Marvin Lanphere for a day in Maui"? He'd laugh a little and say yes, that he remembered that day.
