Marcela Fernandez Atanacio's Obituary
Our beloved Marcela Fernandez Atanacio, passed away on March 9, 2025, in Elk Grove,
California. She was 92 years old.
Marcela was preceded in death by her parents, Pablo Atanacio and Juana Atanacio: sister,
Paulina A. Santos, brothers, Jose, Jovito Sr., and Bonifacio Atanacio. She is survived by her siblings,
Paciencia Cabacungan, Angelita Macaraeg, and Guerrero Atanacio. She was an aunt,
grandmother, and great grandmother to many.
Marcela was born on February 19, 1933, in Solano, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines. She graduated
with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Education at University of the East, Manila Philippines
before migrating to the United States on August 10, 1969. She dedicated her working years
teaching at various high schools and elementary schools within the San Francisco Unified School
District. Her passion for teaching and learning did not cease. Marcela pursued further studies at
the University of San Francisco and graduated with a Master’s degree in Education in 1982.
Marcela enjoyed the simple things in life, such as gardening, hosting, and entertaining family
and friends through endless conversations and laughter. She loved to celebrate achievements,
no matter how big or small. She brought the family together. She truly lived the “American
dream” and with courage, hard work and perseverance, she was able to extend that “dream” to
her siblings and their families. To her family and friends, her legacy will remain forever. She was
a superwoman.
