Madelyn Scardigli's Obituary
Madelyn Scardigli
February 18, 1933 - July 17, 2022
Resident of the Bay Area for 65 years and of Star, Idaho the past 5 years, Madelyn Scardigli, born Feb. 18, 1933 to the late Helen and James Virruso in Chicago, IL, passed away on July 17, 2022 with her granddaughter by her side in Portland, Oregon after a sudden and brief illness. She is survived by her daughter Helene Gates and her husband Bruce of Star; Granddaughter Christina (Baldisseri) Clay and her husband Jonah of Portland; brother in law, Robert Marshall of Menlo Park, CA; nephew and Godson Joseph Marshall and his wife Pam of Reno, NV; Lisa Trapani and her husband Marc of Benecia, CA; James Marshall and his wife Kim of Menlo Park, CA; and many other adoring family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her dearest friend and twin sister, Sarane Marshall; her beloved son, Tony Scardigli; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Maddy’s natural charm and ability to connect with those around her made her adored and loved by all who met her.
She was raised in the Chicago area, where she met her former husband Lido and moved to Millbrae, CA with her family at the age of 20. She and Lido were married at St. Dunstans Church in Millbrae in 1954, followed by the completion of their family with their children, Helene and Tony. Maddy lived near her sister Sarane as they raised their children together in Millbrae and stayed close to her sister throughout their lives. Maddy was a natural caretaker, serving as the primary caretaker of her parents at the end of their lives, supported her sister at the end of hers, and managed the care of her son through his life. She was popular among her friends, with a robust and ever-growing social circle and was incredibly generous to those around her.
Maddy’s love of the San Francisco Giants was strong, attending Spring Training several times with her daughter and granddaughter in Arizona in recent years and never missing a game. She loved to be in the kitchen and was known for her chicken cacciatore, Italian beef sandwiches, and making a strong vodka martini. She loved to share stories of her childhood as a twin and was always open to sharing advice and having late night chats with her granddaughter.
Memorial to be held Friday, July 29th at 10:30 a.m. at Skylawn Memorial Park.
