Mabel Louise Winding's Obituary
July 13,1929 - October 10, 2024
With her warm smile, infectious laugh, and genuine love for people, Mabel Louise Winding enjoyed a long life of connection and community. A beloved mother, aunt, godmother, and friend to so many, Mabel will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Mabel McCoy was born on July 13,1929, in Olmsted, Illinois, to James and Cletus McCoy. A devout Christian, her faith was central to her life. After moving to California in 1952, she joined Providence Baptist Church of San Francisco under the leadership of Reverend Freeman B. Banks. She remained an active and dedicated member under the leadership of Reverend Clinton W. Rogers, Reverend Calvin Jones, Sr., Reverend Calvin Jones, Jr. (both deceased), Reverend Timothy E. Gray, and Reverend Dr. Leroy E. Adams, Jr. Mabel sang joyfully with the Inspirational Chorus, the Voices of Providence, and the Mass Choir. We will never forget her exuberant renditions of her favorite song, “Rise Up and Walk”! She was also very involved in many of the church’s women’s groups: the Women’s Missionary Union, the Lydia Circle, the Community Outreach Food Program, and the Vacation Bible School Culinary Staff. In 1987, Mabel was honored to be selected as the Women’s Day Culinary Chair for the Prayer Breakfast, and in 1989, she served as the Women’s Day Chairperson.
Mabel’s love and service to others was also evident in her professional life as she spent her career as a medical aide at Peninsula Hospital. She cared for the patients there for 35 years,10 years in nursery, 15 in psych, as well as 10 years in community health and mental health, before leaving to go into home service. Mabel then cared for Mrs. Hildy and later Ms. B. Her love was so deep—Ms. B. became part of the family.
Mabel gave love and kindness generously to the whole community, but her greatest gifts were to her family. In 1957, Mabel met, and married A.J. Winding and they had two daughters, Angela (Cookie) Winding and Lori (Sissy) Winding. Mabel was also blessed with a beautiful granddaughter, Sha’Nice (Poodie) Patterson, born to her daughter Lori. For them, Mabel was a tireless source of both strength and kindness, always willing to do whatever was needed. On October 10th 2024, God sent an angel to carry her home to be in eternal rest and peace with him, but her memory lives on in her survivors: her beautiful daughter Angela and precious granddaughter Sha’Nice, stepson Ray Winding and his wife Diane Winding, nephew Sherman P. Leache, godchildren Julius Magee, Lashanda Tucker, Susan Lewis-Yizar, and Michelle Jacobs, as well as her many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews. We are comforted knowing that Mabel is in God’s care, reunited with her husband A.J. and daughter Lori.
