Lynn D. Richey's Obituary
Retired United States Navy Chief Petty Officer, Lynn D. Richey, age 101, died in peace the evening of Dec 6th, 2018 in Cupertino, CA. Born June 11, 1917 in Lamoni, Iowa, the son of Frank W. and Lena L. Richey, Lynn was the fifth of eight children.In 1941, he married Irene Granfors in Fresno, CA. Then, with the outbreak of WW II, Lynn enlisted with the United States Navy to begin a 20 year career. The Navy guided Lynn and his family across the country from California to Virginia to Florida to Tennessee and eventually back west to Moffett Field in Sunnyvale. In the Navy, he specialized in aviation electronics, spending combat time at sea and in the air. He served aboard four Naval ships including the U.S.S. Helena. He flew twenty combat missions as Radioman and Gunner resulting in nine medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross. Following the Navy, Lynn started a new career in electronics with Sylvania Corp. Having anchored in Sunnyvale with his family, he completed another 20 year retirement in the formative years of Silicon Valley.He was very proud of his family and his service to country. He was fond of camping, fishing and boating and frequently shared stories with his family, friends and fellow veterans. He is survived by two sons Frank Richey of Fayetteville, NC, and Fred Richey of Scotts Valley, CA, three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Irene, wife Daisy, four brothers Clark, Duane, Fred, Virgil and three sisters Betty, Colleen and Mildred. A funeral with military honors will be held at Skylawn Memorial in San Mateo.
