Lynn P. Hunwick's Obituary
Lynn Pulliam Hunwick
The Reverend Lynn Pulliam Hunwick entered Eternal Life on October 14, 2017 at the age of 93.
Lynn was born on September 16, 1924 to William and Nell Hunwick. His father, William Hunwick, traveled from London, England to San Francisco, California. He married Nell Pulliam, and they moved to San Jose.
Lynn graduated from Los Gatos High School, and was the youngest Eagle Scout in the County. Lynn’s family spent enjoyable summers in the Santa Cruz Mountains at their cabin, "Dawn Haven", and swam at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in the 1930’s. His mother was an accomplished pianist who performed with Big Bands on Santa Catalina Island. His cousins were in show business in New York City. One cousin, Ednamay French (Hunwick), was a Radio City Rockette and his cousin and lifelong friend, Irene French (Hunwick), was Miss Broadway of New York City, in 1929.
Lynn graduated from San Jose State University, where he played Varsity Football, and was President of the Epsilon Pi Tau Honor Society. He was also President of the San Jose Chapter of the National Society Sons of The American Revolution. Lynn’s father died when he was a child, and his mother remarried Leon Goldberg Askew, Sr. from Florida.
Lynn’s stepbrother, Reubin O’Donovan Askew, was the 37th Governor of Florida. Lynn attended the United States Naval Academy in Annopolis, Maryland, and then served four years in the U.S. Navy with an honorable discharge. While in the Navy, Lynn chose to become a Chaplain. After completing a B.A. in Education, Lynn received a Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry from the Berkeley Baptist Divinity School.
He met Marilyn Anderson, and they married at Grace Baptist Church in San Jose, California, in the loving company of family, friends and colleagues. They moved to Palo Alto, where Lynn attended Stanford University to work on his Ph.D. in Overseas and Comparative Education, as he enjoyed his position as a Stanford University Chaplain. He lived and worked in India for 10 years with the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society. His three children were born in India and attended Kodaikanal International School.
Lynn returned to Palo Alto to continue his work in education and the ministry, and to support the Technical School and High School he helped to develop in India. Lynn is remembered for his quick wit and exuberant sense of humor. He had a great love and appreciation for music, often recalling the songs his mother had played on her baby grand piano in the 1930’s. Lynn was known for his chivalrous and generous show of kindness to everyone that he met.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Susan Davis, his stepbrother, Reubin Askew Esq., and his wife, Marilyn. Lynn is survived by his children, Elizabeth Hunwick, Brian (Sita Wendroff) Hunwick, Keith (Sheryl Kendall) Hunwick, his grandchildren, Marc MacDonald, Bradley (Nicona) MacDonald, Chloe Hunwick, and great grandchildren, Connor MacDonald and Kaylee Mae MacDonald, Maxwell MacDonald and Angelina Marie MacDonald.
A Memorial Service and Reception for family, friends, and neighbors, has been held in Palo Alto. A private Catholic Committal Service, officiated by Deacon Dominick Peloso for the family, was held at Skylawn Funeral Home and Memorial Park in San Mateo, California.
