Lynn S. Ewing's Obituary
Lynn Singleton Ewing September 8, 1951 to August 10, 2019Family and friends of Lynn Singleton Ewing, a long time resident of San Carlos, California, are grieving her sudden death on August 10 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, while visiting her daughter, Kristin Meeker.Lynn was the daughter of Lee and Joan Singleton in San Diego, CA. She has one sister, Vickie Singleton, born 4 years later. After graduating from Grossmont High School in La Mesa, Lynn worked as a flight attendant for Western Airlines. She lived in Minnesota for 5 years and married Bill Meeker before returning to California. They had one daughter, Kristin Meeker. In 1989 Lynn returned to college and received a Bachelor’s Degree Summa Cum Laude in Psychology in 1991. Lynn Singleton married Gail Ewing and united their families on May 26, 1985 at the Kohl Mansion in Burlingame. Lynn brought her daughter Kristin to the marriage and Gail, his two daughters, Melissa Saberi and Jessica Krause. Together they had one son, Todd Ewing.Lynn and Gail’s marriage was busy and filled with friends, travel and love. They bought their beautiful home in San Carlos in 1992 and proceeded to renovate it to make it a wonderful place for entertaining. One of Lynn’s great delights was her annual 4th of July party. Gail and Lynn hosted the wedding ceremony of Melissa Ewing to Tom Saberi, on September 15, 2000, at their home. After Gail’s retirement in 1998, he enjoyed updating and maintaining the home by adding solar panels, redesigning the front and back yards, replacing and enlarging the back deck and, just this July, started on a complete kitchen renovation. Lynn was particularly happy and proud of the redesigned backyard which included a vegetable garden, drought resistant plants and an abundance of gorgeous flowers.Lynn’s daughter Kristin Meeker was very close to her mother. Lynn visited her often after she moved from California to Vermont and more recently to Albuquerque where Kristin and her partner Glen, they moved there in 2016.Lynn and Gail’s son Todd was helpful to them both. He was always repairing, updating or helping Lynn with her computer. He recently returned to live with them, and Lynn was so happy to have him home not only because of how helpful he was, but also because he had his son, Benjamin Ross Ewing, with him about half the time and she could play and participate in her youngest grandchild’s life. She was looking forward to many pleasurable years helping Todd, and his partner, Rachel Greider, raise Ben who will be three on October 6. Lynn was a loving and involved grandparent to five other grandchildren. Melissa and Tom Saberi’s two sons, Josiah, 14, and Zaiden, 11, and Jessica and Dan Krause’s three children Kolbey, 9, Beau 7, and Elsie 3. She was especially involved in the lives of Josiah and Zaiden who also live in San Carlos, taking them for part of the day almost every week and attending their games and school events. Additionally, Lynn would visit Jessica and her family (Dan is in the Navy), wherever they were stationed to spend time with them and their three extremely lovable children. Lynn’s sister, Vickie Singleton, was a very significant person in her life. They talked weekly, and the family would often gather at Lynn and Gail’s home for the holidays. Vickie’s children, Brittany Roney and C.J. Ketcham, and their spouses Sean and Erin, will miss her powerful presence in their lives, as she was seen as the heart and center of the family. Lynn and Gail supported an important cause in Brittany’s life, The Worldwide Endometriosis March (abbreviated EndoMarch) which was a global campaign involving synchronized, multi-city ‘march and rally’ demonstrations for the cause of endometriosis. Lynn was looking forward to participating in the life of Brittany and Sean Roney’s daughter, Ana Katrina, who was born November 30, 2017.In 1985, Lynn and Gail became members of the Unitarian Universalists of San Mateo. She contributed to the church as Director of Religious Education, and by serving on many committees, singing in the Choir, acting as a Worship Associate, leading the Compensation and Benefits Committee, and too many other activities to list. She won the Anne Benner Award for her service to UUSM in 2002. In addition, she supported UUSM’s sister congregation in Ulay in the Philippines and traveled to the Philippines twice to visit the church there, meet the members and the elementary school student whom she and Gail sponsor.Lynn played and loved the accordion after taking it up again as an adult in her 40s. She was extremely active in the San Francisco Accordion Club. As one member said “Lynn was more than an accordion player, teacher, and a past president of the club. She was the glue that held the club and the local accordion community together for over 20 years.” She played nationally and internationally and was renowned for her professionalism, dedication to practicing, and willingness to help other players. Lynn had many interests. She travelled to over 50 countries, most with Gail, and often with their good friends Roger and Linda Jacobs. She loved art, and studied Spanish. She played in a Bunco group for 25 years, was a beloved member of the Palomar Park Garden Club, sang in a round-singing group, attended UU Family Camp and Labor Day Camp in Mendocino for many years, and cultivated innumerable lifelong friendships. She was charismatic, dependable, and made herself available to anyone in need, including housing her best friend of 30 years, Deeana McLemore, before and after her liver transplant. Her capacity for love, compassion, empathy and forgiveness were just a few of her many extraordinary qualities. Lynn was buried in a private ceremony on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at Skylawn Memorial Park Cemetery in San Mateo with her family and closest friends in attendance. There will be a Celebration of Life service for Lynn Ewing on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at 10:30 am at Filoli House and Gardens at 86 Canada Road, Woodside, CA 94062.
