Lourduswami Joseph Durairaj's Obituary
Lourduswami Joseph Durairaj, aged 87, of Athukudi, India, died peacefully in his home in Clovis, California on the evening of July 12th.Lourduswami was born May 8, 1929 in Athukudi, India and taught Physics at Lawrence School in Lovedale, India for over 20 years before moving to the United States with his family in 1978.While known later in life for his outspoken personality and easy humor, he will be remembered as a stern teacher and father, with high expectations for his students and family. Despite the cultural and social norms of the time, Lourduswami was an unstinting advocate for his daughters’ schooling, creating a respect for both education and educators that has lasted into the following generation.Lourduswami’s grandchildren will remember him as a generous, active, and sometimes exasperating presence in their lives. He was as quick to remember their favorite video games and fast food as he was to bring up the times they misplaced the remote. He was diligent and exacting, but above all else, he was dependable. In a large and often complicated family, he was rarely fickle, often kind, and deeply loyal.Lourduswami is survived by his wife Leela; daughters Kumari (Sam) Reddy, and Selvi (Regis) Britto; grandchildren, Michael, Nevin, Reuben, Vanya, and Kevin; and his sister, J. Philomena. They invite you to celebrate his life at the wake service on July 17th between 4 and 7 pm and funeral on July 18th at 9:30 am. Both will be held at the Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo, California.
