Lois Shewman Shouse's Obituary
Lois Shewman Shouse died on Saturday, March 4, 2023. She was 92 years old. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of almost 70 years, Robert (Bob), her daughter and son-in-law Loris and John van Ark, her son and daughter-in-law David and Mary Shouse, four grandchildren and the two great grandchildren that she joyfully was able to see come into this world in 2021. She is also survived by her dear sister Pam Borini. Lois and Bob lived an example of long lasting love and devotion to family.
Born in Missouri in 1930, Lois moved with her family to Southern California as a young girl. She met Bob in class at San Jose State University. They married in 1955 in Shreveport, LA while Bob was active in the Air Force. After Bob completed his service, they moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, settling in Belmont, CA where they raised their family. They most recently have lived in Sunnyvale.
Lois was a teacher by profession and calling, starting with her first class at the age of 19 with an emergency credential. She taught in all grades in elementary school but spent most of her years with the age she loved most, kindergarten. She was active with Alpha Delta Kappa—an honorary association for women educators where she worked to better her profession, mentor younger educators and support altruistic efforts in the community. She proudly celebrated 50 years with Alpha Delta Kappa, Beta Rho chapter in 2021.
Lois was a passionate photographer. She thoroughly documented every life event and wanted to see every picture anyone else took. She also was a photographic artist, striving for perfect shots of nature. Lois was active with the Peninsula Camera Club and the Northern California Council of Camera Clubs as a member, judge and frequent officer. She judged into her 90s reviewing submissions online and doing feedback via Zoom during the pandemic.
A celebration of Lois’ life will be held at the Congregational Church of Belmont—their church home for many years—on Sunday, June 11, 2023 at 1:00pm. She will be laid to rest at Skylawn Memorial Park in a small ceremony on Monday, June 12, 2023.
