Lo-Ching Hua's Obituary
Lo-Ching Hua passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. Loving husband to Sui-Sheng, daughters Inez and her husband Timothy Whalen, Vanessa and her husband Marc Puich, and son Lawrence. Adoring grandfather to Declan Whalen and Luka and Tobias Puich.Lo-Ching was a talented and hard-working structural engineer, admired by his friends and colleagues. His professional contributions were as varied and significant as the Sears Tower in Chicago, the Metro Line in Taipei, nuclear facilities in Santa Barbara, Bechtel projects in Saudi Arabia, earthquake retrofitting buildings in Chinatown, and school and church construction in the San Francisco Bay Area. He also designed his family's home in Orinda.Born in Wuhan, China, he was the son of a naval attaché and a poet. He graduated from National Taiwan University, and earned his master's at the State University of Iowa, and his doctorate at Iowa State University. He was a registered professional structural engineer.He enjoyed sailing on his 28-foot sailboat, the Six Happiness, cross-country skiing, swimming and singing. In his courageous fight with Parkinson's disease, he remained as active as possible, spending time with his wife and children, remodeling the house, and traveling to Alaska, Australia, Brazil, China, Hawaii, Panama, among other places.He had an unfailing devotion and love for his family. A respected elder always sought for his advice and assistance, he helped his siblings and their children settle in the United States and served as a role model. He graciously hosted countless meals for friends and family, entertaining them with stories and a wonderful sense of humor. We will always remember him as a wise and generous man.Services will be held at Skylawn Funeral Home on June 15th, at 10:00am. There will be a reception following the services at HK Flower Lounge in Millbrae.
