Liberato Ocampo de LumenJune 16, 1945 – June 27, 2019Liberato “Lito” Ocampo de Lumen was born in Taytay, in the province of Rizal, Philippines on June 16, 1945 to the late Soledad Ocampo de Lumen and the late Amado Lumen, Sr. Soledad raised Lito and his five siblings after his father died when he was only two years old. Lito passed away with his loved ones by his side on June 27, 2019 in San Jose, California, U.S.A.: his wife Fatima, “Patti”; son Liberato Luis; daughter, Ferial “Ria” and son-in-law, Peter Villareal.Lito was educated by Dominicans at Saint Catherine School in Rizal Province, Philippines for most of his primary and secondary education. After high school, he worked with the family business, De Lumen Press in Taytay while attending college at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City. Consequently, he received his bachelor’s degree in Economics. Lito then received a scholarship for his Master’s of Arts in Economics at the University of Connecticut. He completed his Graduate Diploma in Development Economics at Wolfson College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, England.Lito proved success in coordinating multi-skilled teams to deliver complex government projects in public economics. He taught undergraduate and graduate economic courses in micro and macroeconomics, money and banking, public finance, and managerial economics in American and Philippine college and universities. Lito was working with the University of California COOP Agricultural Research Department based in Southern California and at the same time taught in the Los Angeles Community Colleges. Prior to teaching in Los Angeles, he taught managerial economics at De La Salle University and the Ateneo University Graduate School of Business, in the Philippines and St. John’s College in New York City. He was an economic consultant at the Development Academy of the Philippines; Executive Director of the Philippine Export Council and a technical consultant with the Commissioner at the Bureau of Internal Revenue, Department of Finance in the Philippines.Lito is survived by his wife, Fatima “Patti” Sabelino; his son, Liberato Luis “Louie”; his daughter, Ferial “Ria”; son in-law Peter Villareal; granddaughters Audrey, Skylar and Stella Villareal; his sister Benilda and her spouse, Romuel Galvez; his brothers and their spouses: Bonifacio and Brigida Rayos del Sol; Benito and Helen Zapanta; and Jose and Gloria Vizconde along with his nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Amado, Jr., the eldest brother, predeceased Lito and is survived by his spouse, Zenaida and their children Zaida, Melvin and Andrew.Lito will be remembered as an avid tennis player and runner who enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and loved watching and listening to operas and musical plays. Family members, former colleagues and students praised his writing and communication skills. Many students say Professor de Lumen made economics easy to understand. Relatives say Lito would do almost anything for his wife. Lito was a very involved father making sure he helped his children with their schoolwork and picked them up after school while completing their secondary education in Los Angeles. He wanted his children to succeed in life with values of being in awe of God, self-discipline and punctuality. Lito called his grandchildren his angels. He is missed by all his family and close friends.Liberato de Lumen will have a Funeral Mass on Friday, July 12, 2019 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 751 Waverly Street, Palo Alto, California at 10 a.m. There will be a viewing at 1 p.m. followed by internment for Lito at 3 p.m. at Skylawn Funeral Home and Memorial Park, on Highway 92 and Skyline Boulevard, San Mateo, California.
