Larry V. Comer's Obituary
Larry V. Comer, 82Larry Vernon Comer, 82, passed away on Monday, January 11, 2016, at the Masonic Home of California in Union City, California following his long struggle with inclusion body myositis. The only child of the late Lafayette “Larry” H. Comer and Violet E. (Peterson) Comer, Larry grew up in Daly City, California and graduated from Jefferson High School, Class of 1951. After graduation, Larry attended the College of San Mateo for a brief time, but then decided to become an apprentice carpenter, following the footsteps of his father. In the fall of 1956, Larry was drafted into the U.S. Army and received orders to transfer to Germany. In December of 1956 and just prior to his deployment to Germany, Larry married the love of his life, the Audrey Annette (Vitorelo) Comer, whom he sadly lost to cancer in 2005. Following the completion of his military service, Larry returned to the San Francisco Bay Area, and worked with his father in building homes in San Francisco and South San Francisco. Later, Larry obtained his own general contractor’s license. Larry and Audrey lived in South San Francisco and raised three children, Chris, Lori and Julie. In 1971, Larry accepted a position as a building inspector and was employed by the City of Santa Clara for 25 years, retiring in 1995 as the Supervising Building Inspector.Larry was preceded in death by his dear wife of almost 50 years, Audrey, and his son, Christopher A. Comer, whom he lost in 2011. Larry is survived by his daughters, Lorraine V. (“Lori”) Comer and Julie A. Comer-Moulton, daughter-in-law Marie Comer and son-in-law, Mark Moulton, his grandchildren, Renee and Kevin Comer and Daniel and Matthew Moulton, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. Larry was a loving father, husband, grandfather and had many friends who he loved.Throughout his life, Larry was actively involved in the Masonic lodge and was a past Master and lifetime member of California Lodge No. 1, F&AM, of San Francisco. Larry was also a 32° Scottish Rite Mason and a past Trustee of California Lodge and Hiram Award recipient. Larry and Audrey attended many social events with the lodge, which they both always enjoyed. Prior to his illness he was an avid golfer and loved to follow his favorite sports teams, the San Francisco 49ers and the San Francisco Giants.A special thank you to the staff of the Masonic Home of California in Union City for their loving care and support to Larry during his long illness and residency at the home.Funeral services will be held at the Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo, CA, on Friday, January 15, 2016, at 12:00, followed by burial. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Masonic Homes of California, Office of Philanthropy, 1111 California Street, San Francisco, CA 94108.
