San Mateo – LaGrande Orley Hatfield, 88, passed away on January 16, 2022.
Mr. Hatfield was born August 4, 1933 in Los Angeles, California to LeGrand and Faye Blakeman Hatfield. Mr. Hatfield was a 1951 graduate of Lincoln Community High School in Lincoln, Illinois. After graduation he served aboard the USS Murray (DDE-576) during the Korean Conflict before marrying his High School Sweetheart, Clarine Stumpf, in 1955 and then graduating from the University of Illinois in 1960. He retired, after 40 years, from Dalmo Victor Company, Belmont Ca, as Director of Engineering. Orley was a long-time parishioner of St Bartholomew’s Church. He was a 3rd degree Knights of Columbus member, was a Commodore of the Coyote Point Yacht Club, and was also the Echanson Provincial (Pacific Northwest Wine Director) for an International Wine Society, Société Mondiale Du Vin.
Orley and Clarine were quite active in boating, for 20 years, where they spent many hours cruising the Bay and visiting almost every yacht club from San Francisco Bay to Sacramento. He also helped deliver boats from Alaska to San Diego. Orley enjoyed golfing at many different courses around the United States. After golfing, Orley participated in the Elk’s and SIRs bowling leagues.
Orley recently joined the Sainte Claire Club, in San Jose, and enjoyed many lunches and dinners with old friends as well as new acquaintances. Orley has been a long-time member in the San Mateo Elks Lodge and the Sons in Retirement, as well as the “Association of Old Crows” since 1969. The Association of Old Crows is an International professional organization, with over 14,000 members, specializing in Electronic Warfare. Orley was one of the initial members to be inducted into the “Electronic Warfare Technology Hall of Fame” for his technical contributions to Radar Warning Systems.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Clarine, two sons, Douglas L. (Pilar), Santa Cruz, Ca; Orley E. (Heather), Redwood City, Ca; three daughters, Tricia Wilson (Brad), Danville, Ca; Lesley Bertron, San Mateo, Ca; Teresa Foye (Chris), Granite Bay, Ca. and nine grandchildren; Stephanie Wilson (Markus) Mattson, Greg Wilson, Wade Wilson, Dr. Jeanette Bertron (Bryan) Downey, Jeremy Bertron, Jessica Hatfield, Keith Orley Hatfield, Demitri Foye, Lythia Foye, and one great grandson, Beckett LaGrande Mattson. Also surviving is his stepsister Roberta (Miller) Tucey (Arizona). His parents and sister, Nancy Hatfield Eichelberger, preceded him in death.
Services will be conducted at St Bartholomew’s Catholic Church on January 28, 2022 at 10:00 in the morning. Reception to follow at the San Mateo Elks Club. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to be given to your local Humane Society.
