I first met Karen in Jr. High, when all the grade schools blended together. We became friends, and I spent many after-school hours at her home. Karen was quiet at first, but so much fun when you got to know her. She was incredibly smart, but sensitive and kind as well. In truth I was intimidated by her intellect, but that came from within me- Karen never made me feel "less than." I visited her in her dorm at UW once, but lost contact with her after that. My dad told me she had twins after seeing her mom at Safeway once, and I remember being excited for her. I did not know, however, of her long battle with the after effects of her experimental cancer treatment. What a truly courageous spirit she possessed, and I am in awe of the strength she must have had to get her through the bad days. I have thought of her frequently through the years, without a clue as to what the was enduring. My deep sympathies to her parents, siblings, husband, and children. She went far too soon. The world feels a bit dimmer for her loss.- Janet (Dyer) Grant
