Kamla Kumar's Obituary
Kamla Kumar, known as "Mai '' was 88 years old when she departed from us on January 11, 2023 in South San Francisco at the South San Francisco Kaiser Hospital due to Acute Respiratory Failure.
In her early years, Mai was born on June 4th, 1934 in Jitu State, Samabula, Fiji. Mai sailed the Oriana and entered the United States in Honolulu, Hawaii on March 16, 1966 with her husband, Bal Kumar and their four children, Suresh, George, Omesh, and Arwin. Mai and her husband Bal and their four children resided in Monterey, California for about a year in 1966 and made their way to their permanent location in South San Francisco in 1967.
Mai worked as a hotel maid for over 40 years. More than a hotel maid she was our Mai. Mai was a loving woman, daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, leaving behind 4 children and 7 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. Family members remember how strong and caring Mai was in her times. Mai was a great softball player in younger days and gave her heart to the San Francisco 49ers. Many knew she had her fair share of disagreements in politics. Mai always taught her family to work hard, save your money and be strong. She always taught her children to not be sorry if things weren't going well, she would say "don't be sorry." She touched many lives and we will continue to honor her legacy as a family and keep her alive in our memories.
