Julie Chhen's Obituary
Julie Chhen aka Chea Ly Thai, 78, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, July 16 in San Jose, CA.
Julie was born on July 3, 1946, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to Kean Key and Kim Thai.
In 1970, she married Chay Ly Chhen. They started a family residential construction business until they had to escape the war in Cambodia. This forced them to move to Thailand, immigrate to Minnesota, and ultimately settle in Northern California in 1980. They welcomed three beautiful children—one daughter Megan and two sons, Darrat and Sonny. Despite the challenges of the Cambodian Civil War, which tragically claimed Darrat's life, their enduring love helped drive and motivate them in their new life in a foreign country.
Julie held various jobs, with her proudest being a teacher’s aide, assisting in the education of many youths. In 1987, after working long hours as a medical assembler and multiple jobs, Julie was able to save enough money to start a family business. Thus, a new chapter unfolded as they proudly assumed ownership of "Best Donut" then "World Donut and Ice Cream," bringing sweetness to the community until their retirement.
One of Julie’s favorite hobbies and ways to show her love was through her incredible cooking. Whenever any of our family member hosted a party, she would send her delicious food home with guests. Her life journey had many obstacles, but her heart radiated familial warmth, leaving behind a legacy of wisdom and an understanding of the importance of family above everything else, along with a witty sense of humor.
Today, Julie rests in tranquility, reunited with her departed spouse, parents, siblings, and the cherished soul of her son. As we navigate the delicate threads between worlds, let us fondly remember the profound composition of her life—a tune of love, kindness, and consideration that continues to resonate in the everyday moments we hold dear.
She is survived by her two children and three grandchildren (Brennan, Emily, and Jacob). A funeral will be held on Sunday, July 28, 2024, at Skylawn Memorial.
