Judy Stephenson's Obituary
Judy Stephenson, 67, passed away peacefully after a long battle with cancer on February 2, 2017 at her home in Hillsborough surrounded by family. She was born in Carbondale, Pennsylvania and was the second daughter of Dr. John and Anne Casey and sister to Susan (Casey) Lubbers, Elizabeth (Casey) Wonder, Dr. Anne Casey, Lauren (Casey) McTear, Dr. John Casey, and Dr. Steven Casey. Judy’s father was an orthopedic surgeon and her family moved several times during her early childhood before settling into their long-time family home in Philadelphia.After she graduated from the College of New Rochelle in 1971, Judy embarked on a cross-country road trip with a friend before ultimately settling in San Francisco. It was here that Judy began her over eleven year career with Bank of America where she rose to become Vice President in the Global System Services Group.In 1978, Judy met John Stephenson, the love of her life, and they were married in San Francisco a year later. Together they enjoyed over 37 years of marriage. In 1982, Judy and John welcomed their son, Peter, and Judy made the decision to retire from Bank of America to focus on their family full-time. Two and a half years later, their daughter Laura was born. In 1986, the family moved to Chicago where they lived for nearly three years before moving back to the Bay Area and settling in Hillsborough, California.Judy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend to many and truly enjoyed bringing people together and making others feel special. Judy’s warmth, generosity, sense of humor, and love for storytelling brought joy to those around her. Judy started her own interior design business when the children were older and was always involved in some sort of creative “do it yourself” project. She was a proud member of her book club for over 25 years and an active member of the Episcopal Church of St. Matthew for over 36 years. Judy served on numerous committees and boards within the local community and was a dedicated volunteer and supporter of CASA of San Mateo County and the Hillsborough Schools. Judy and John were avid world travelers and visited over 60 countries together, bringing Peter and Laura along with them on many of these adventures.Judy is survived by her devoted husband John and their two loving children and their families, Peter Stephenson and his wife Sarah, granddaughter Caroline, and grandson Keith of Bern, Switzerland and Laura (Stephenson) Reich and her husband Scott of Denver, Colorado, and her six beloved siblings and their families.A memorial service to celebrate Judy’s life will be held at The Episcopal Church of St. Matthew in San Mateo on Saturday, February 25th at 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations in honor of Judy may be made to CASA of San Mateo County (www.casaofsanmateo.org/donate).
