Juana Vergara Dela Cruz was the youngest of 9 children born to Catalina Bautista and Librato Vergara. On November 2, 1940 in Bardias, San Miguel, Bulacan, Philippines, she married Rodolfo Dela Cruz, with whom she had 10 children. Having a fourth-grade education did not limit Juana as she utilized her superior math skills, resourcefulness, and work ethic in building her business. She supported her children and helped them obtain a college education by buying and selling livestock, vegetables, and rice. Additionally, she was a real estate investor, who taught her children that real estate is a good investment and even helped some of her children get started by providing them assistance with a down payment on a house. She eventually moved to South San Francisco, California in 1976. Juana continued her entrepreneurship by cooking desserts and chicharron to sell to friends and eventually to stores to make a living. She was the fun-loving grandmother that babysat many of her grandchildren. She gained many friends here in the US with her welcoming spirit. She was called “Inang,” which means mom in Tagalog, by those who knew her, even if they were not her children. Over the years, her home in Daly City became a central place for family and friends to gather with good food and various card games. She had so much energy even through her advanced age, so much so that she played poker up to two weeks before her passing. Inang Juana’s earthly presence will be missed by many, but her warm, fun-loving spirit will live in our hearts and memories forever.
