Joye D Miller's Obituary
After a short, difficult battle with cancer, Joye (Joe) Duane Miller passed away on April 30, 2017, in Fremont, California, at the age of 82.Joe was born on February 1, 1935, in Adelphi, Iowa, to father, Gale Charles Miller, and Helen Belle Miller, who have predeceased him. From 1953 to 1956 , Joe served as a Seaman in the United States Naval Reserve. Attending on a basketball scholarship, Joe graduated from Humboldt State University in 1959 and was one of the first teachers recruited at Logan High School in Union City, California. In addition to teaching art during his 30-year career, Joe coached swimming, golf, and his true passion – basketball.Joe retired in 1989 and, as a avid fisherman, enjoyed many years of fishing and boating on the Delta and San Francisco Bay with his long-time girlfriend Nancy Kaniuth. He was made honorary life-time member of the Caliente Isle Yacht Club in 2016, where he dedicated many hours of service at club events. Joe was also a devoted Golden State Warriors and Oakland Raiders fan for whom, in his retirement, he worked several seasons as a team volunteer.Joe is survived by his three children, Cole Miller (wife, Mona), Phil Miller (wife, Pat), and Kerry Jo Bourns (husband, Rick), along with four grandchildren, Marianne Slettleland (husband, Nate), Grant Miller, Michelle Stephenson (husband, Mike), and Valerie Miller, and great-grandson, Colton Stephenson, as well as his sister, Patricia Cooper, four nephews and one niece.The family would especially like to thank Hayward Hospice for the dedicated care and support.
